Robot Mice, Robots, and Drones---A Coding Progression in a K-5 School
Media Specialist and STEM Instructor in a K-5 school provide coding opportunities for students. Participants begin their coding experience with small robotic mice that are easily coded. The particpants then progress to a more advanced level of coding with robots. The final step is coding with drones and other apps.

TouchCast Studio: Unlimited possibilities for students to create their own high quality presentations with visuals, sounds, and interactive whiteboards...and it’s FREE!
TouchCast Studio is a free iPad app that allows users to create presentations with the push of a button. Users can incorporate web pages, photos, videos, items from Google Drive, and even poll questions into the broadcast. Users can add audience sound effects to the presentation. The app also allows users to incorporate the use of green screen and whiteboards. This is a hands-on session and iPads will be provided.

Transforming Instruction in the Secondary Classroom via the TIM Model
The presenters will introduce the Technology Integration Matrix (TIM Model), which helps educators use technology to achieve higher learning goals with their students. They then will examine lessons and units in the secondary classroom, highlighting concrete ways to move Entry Level activities to Goal-Directed Transformation. Participants will then collaborate to transform an additional entry-level activity, putting into play the techniques and tools they have seen during the session. The presentation will cover several activities and tools--including Breakouts, blogs, and Google My Maps--that teachers can use to move instruction to the upper end of the TIM Model.

How Google Works: Are Search Engines Really Dumb and Should Educators Care?
Google is the most popular search engine in the world; it processes a billion searches per day, many from students worldwide. When these students are asked how they do research, their first response is likely to be, “I Google the topic. Many on the students have only used Google for research; for them, Research = Googling.” While students perceive themselves as skilled searchers of Google their search queries and research behaviors do not support their assertion. They are not sophisticated users of Google, let alone library resources.
Google’s own research confirms students’ Google illiteracy. Google’s research support of U.C. Berkeley’s “Report on the UC Berkeley Library” found that students overused Google and misused scholarly databases. Further the study concluded, “Indeed, they’re not even very good at using Google for research purposes. Students are unable to take advantage of the resources that are readily available to those who know how to find them.”
The hands-on presentation will demonstrate how Google works, how it determines the ranking of the results to a search query. With this knowledge students will be able to take advantage of Google’s search features and construct better search queries, find better information, and develop Google literacy.

Would you like an easy to use digital portfolio for your students? Seesaw is a great and simple way to have students add their work to a digital portfolio. It's simple enough that students can add the their work themselves. You can even connect parents and use it to send out class information, pictures, and newsletters. My favorite part is that students can easily add a recording so they can explain their thinking or read their writing to an authentic audience.

Last year, my high school students completed year-long, student-directed 20% Time Projects. 20% Time (also known as Genius Hour) required students to design, implement, and present projects that explored an interest or passion and then shared their results with the community. They had 20% of class time to work on these projects.

JMU ISTE Teacher Standards Certification Program: What does ISTE-T look like from the ISTE Student Standards point of view?
James Madison University ISTE-T Certification, an ISTE Mastery Level Seal of Alignment Program, engages teachers in a deeply reflective process to align their instructional technology practices to the teacher standards set forth by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). This opportunity is for self-directed learners who are confident in their use of technology. Participants in the program develop their skills to become technology leaders at the school and district levels.
This session will provide an opportunity to explain the overall scope of the program and its benefits to teachers and administrators. It will include a hands-on activity emphasizing the use of the Student Standards. Interested parties will leave with the following information:
• Participant options.
• Program length.
• The program formats.
• Cost and graduate credit.
• Educational technology use requirements.
• Coaching and feedback.
• A successful completion of the program and what is means for the participant.

The JMU ISTE-T Certification program has been in existence since 2002. In 2008 the change to the new Teacher Standards took place. Prior to 2012, the program was a Virginia school district face-to-face experience. In 2012, the program utilized a distance learning approach and extended its opportunity nationally and internationally.

Making Better Photos with your Smartphone
Join us to share tips and tricks for making better use of the camera you and your students carry everywhere: a smartphone. We’ll start with some basic photography techniques and then take a mini photowalk around the building to try them out. After we'll look at easy ways to edit your images and share them with the world. "I, Too" is an interactive publication that introduces students to African American authors across a wide span of literary eras. The publication is an experiential learning guide that seeks to foster the student/family/community connection by not only teaching students about these authors from a literary standpoint, but by including local relevant places of interest in the community that they can visit with their families to deepen their connection to these authors and their works. Stations: Not Just for Elementary Schools
Make differentiation easy in any classroom by combining the educational benefits of technology and small groups through stations! Allow yourself to be "teaching" multiple lessons at once! An overview of different stations used in my classroom and ideas on how to use a wide variety of resources in any classroom will be presented! Resources discussed include Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Classroom, BlendSpace, Ed Puzzle, screencastify, Speakpipe, and tools specific to the English classroom. In addition, we will share Schoology ideas to organize this. This presentation has an English focus, but it is adaptable to any subject.
